STATE OF THE FRIENDS 2007
Loyal members, volunteers, dedicated Board members, and those who supported our fundraisers –THANK YOU! As a result of your generosity, we have been able to accomplish the following during 2007:
1. SNIP (Spaying/Neutering): In 2007, we paid $90,422 for the spaying/neutering of 1,697 animals (923 cats, 762 dogs and 12 rabbits). Over the past 9-1/2 years, we have paid $527,746 for the spaying/neutering of 8,034 cats, 4,909 dogs, 113 rabbits and one hamster (13,057 animals in total since July 1, 1998). You and we are preventing millions of animals from being born, only to be euthanized or subjected to cruelty.
2. Humane Education: In 2001, Long Beach Unified School District certified our humane education classes. Since that time, 34,366 students have participated in this program free to the schools, at Friends’ expense of $89,646. In 2007, the tally was $21,670 for 4,693 students. Included in 2007 are more than 1,000 new books and other educational tools donated to local schools and libraries to further our humane education goals.
3. Adoptions: We have exhibited 22 of our rescued homeless pets on 24 The Pet Place TV shows, and have been able to adopt out 99 rescued cats and dogs into permanent, loving homes. We paid $2,690 in adoption expenses to further our adoption goals. We have been rescuing cats and dogs one at a time from a large group involved in an animal cruelty case. The good news is we have rescued the last remaining cat.
4. Special Medical Bills for Shelter Animals: We provided $3,690 for life-saving medicine and vet care for special needs of pets in the care of Long Beach Animal Control. In addition, we provided and continue to provide Rymidal so no animal has to suffer with pain while impounded, and Advantage and Frontline to keep pets free of fleas while in the care of Animal Control. And then there is “Tippy,” a canine who arrived at the shelter with a shattered leg, beyond repair. We purchased special food, meds, treats and toys for “Tippy,” who is now the on-site three-legged canine mascot at LBAC, much loved by the LBAC staff and FOLBA.
5. Shelter Assistance – At a cost of $2,910 we have provided 8 cat condos, 8 Avid Mini-trackers, 5 cameras, 1 photo printer and dog and cat breed posters. In addition, we purchased a special microscope to aid in detecting serious illnesses of shelter animals.
6. Community Events – Belmont Shore Christmas Parade, Veterans Parade, Signal Hill Halloween Night, Bixby Knolls Street Fair, CSULB Kaleidoscope.
7. Two Fundraisers - WALK for the Animals and a Long Beach Playhouse event grossed $30,347 thanks to your support. Your participation at these events allows us to fund our programs aggressively.
